Why One Doctor Is Flying Across the World for the San Diego Symposium for Metabolic Health

Inside Dr. Roshani Sanghani’s groundbreaking book, Turn Around Diabetes, and why her interactive workshop on motivational interviewing is a must-attend event

“I’m coming, whatever the cost. Because it’s my tribe.”

Dr. Roshani Sanghani isn’t exaggerating.

The board-certified endocrinologist, Metabolic Health Practitioner (MHP), and author of Turn Around Diabetes will be traveling from India to attend and present at the 10th Annual Symposium for Metabolic Health in San Diego, August 14-17, 2025. And she’s not coming for a vacation. She’s coming to connect with fellow practitioners and patients who want to hear more about what she believes:

That diabetes can be reversed. That protein malnutrition is a hidden epidemic. And that motivational interviewing (MI) might be the most underused tool in all of metabolic medicine.

Why Motivational Interviewing (MI) Matters

Dr. Sanghani will be leading a dynamic, interactive workshop on motivational interviewing—a session she calls a “real play,” not a role play. Attendees will work in groups of three, taking turns practicing MI techniques using real-life scenarios. “We give them some tools to actually do it in a more empathic listening way,” she explains. “Not trying to fix anything. Not telling someone what to do. Just helping them connect the dots with their own wisdom.”

Her previous Grand Rounds for the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners on this very topic drew wide praise, and she followed it up with a compelling presentation at the 2024 Symposium for Metabolic Health in San Diego that was extremely well received by attendees.

“Even in a five-minute session, you can change how you show up as the helper,” she says. “You don’t need a 30-minute block. Just five minutes of reflective listening can help someone feel seen.”

This isn’t just coaching theory. It’s a paradigm shift in healthcare.

“The body wants to thrive,” she added. “The patient is the expert on their life. Our job is to stop trying to fix and start listening.”

The Book: Turn Around Diabetes

Dr. Sanghani’s book, Turn Around Diabetes, has resonated with patients and practitioners alike since its release in mid-2024. Designed primarily for people with diabetes, the book has also found a home in clinics and coaching practices around the world. Doctors have praised its practical utility, and one early reviewer even suggested it should be required reading for healthcare providers.

“This isn’t just a book that tells you to eat better, move more, sleep well, and manage stress. It’s about helping readers bridge the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it—day after day, in real life.

Dr. Sanghani coined the phrase Adult Protein Malnutrition Syndrome to describe a widespread but often ignored phenomenon: the consequences of chronically low protein intake. “Some of my patients get just 15 to 25 grams of protein a day. They experience fatigue, poor immunity, hair loss, pain, and low mood. Once they increase protein, those symptoms begin to fade.”

Culturally, this presents a major challenge in India. “Vegetarianism is common, and many people rely on low-quality protein sources. I meet them where they are, but I also help them see the bigger picture.”

The book’s success has opened up opportunities on podcasts including LowCarbMD, Life’s Best Medicine, Dr. Eric Berg, and the Protect Your Nest Podcast with Dr.Tony Hampton. It’s now available on Amazon globally. Dr. Sanghani was featured on the LowCarbUSA podcast last year.

Bridging Cultures with Science

Dr. Sanghani understands both Eastern and Western medical mindsets. Born and educated in the U.S., she moved to India in 2011 to launch her clinical practice. “In India, patients still put doctors on a pedestal. There’s a reluctance to take ownership of one’s health decisions. But that’s slowly changing.”

She’s working to accelerate that change through bilingual education, digital courses, and by bringing best practices in behavior change from the West to her patients in India.

“Low carb works here in India too. That tells you something. If a therapy holds up across cultures and cuisines, it’s built on real science.”

A Rare Voice on Type 1 Diabetes

Dr. Sanghani is also a passionate advocate for people with Type 1 diabetes. Her message is simple and firm: the term “brittle diabetic” must go.

“There’s no such thing as brittle Type 1. That label is a failure of insulin prescribing. It’s not the patient who is brittle—it’s the protocol.”

She compares the high-carb/high-insulin approach to Formula One racing: fast, volatile, and risky. “Low-carb Type 1 management is like navigating Mumbai traffic. It’s slower, but more stable. Less risk, fewer crashes.”

Her role, she says, is to be an insulin tailor: “I don’t hand out a one-size-fits-all plan. We customize. And we adjust. Because life isn’t static. Hormones shift. Stress hits. You need a flexible plan.”

Why She’s Coming Back to San Diego

“In India, I felt isolated. Coming to the Symposium gave me energy to keep going. It reminded me that I’m not crazy for doing this work. I’m not alone.”

Beyond the professional benefits, Dr. Sanghani says it’s the people who make this event essential.

“The world outside this space is stuck in the old ways. But here, at the Symposium, you find hope, innovation, and practical strategies to actually help people. It’s a community that gets it.”

And she wants to make one thing clear: this isn’t just a medical conference.

“It’s not about one lecture. It’s about seeing how far we’ve come, how much we still have to learn, and who we want to become as practitioners and human beings.”
