Keto Koaching Week 6

Welcome

You made it to Week 6, and you should be proud of what you’ve built. By now, eating this way has become a genuine habit, and you’re well on your way to significantly improved health. You should also be nearing complete adaptation. At minimum, your body has become fat-adapted, learning to burn fat for energy and relying far less on carbs. If you’ve committed fully to a ketogenic lifestyle, you should be fully keto-adapted at this point, meaning your body no longer depends on carbohydrates for energy at all. Most importantly, you’ve cut out sugar, refined carbohydrates, and grains entirely. That alone is a major win, and sticking with it will protect your health for years to come.

This Lifestyle Is Meant to Last

By now, you’ve likely realized this way of eating is genuinely sustainable, not a struggle to maintain. You’re probably more engaged with cooking than ever, discovering new foods and recipes constantly. Lean into that. Enjoy waking up each day feeling clear-headed and energized. From personal experience, the improvements in mental clarity, energy, and overall well-being only continue from here.

Keep tracking what you eat. It keeps you honest and gives you a record to reference when small fluctuations in weight or how you feel show up, so you know exactly what to adjust. Stay consistent with your macronutrient targets to maintain the results you’ve built.

You’ve Probably Seen More Than You Expected

Everyone starts this journey with a specific goal in mind, weight loss, better endurance, managing type 1 diabetes, reversing type 2 diabetes, lowering blood pressure, reducing cardiovascular risk, or simply feeling better day to day. Whatever brought you here, chances are you’ve seen improvements in areas you never expected. I started out wanting to lose weight. I did, but my running improved dramatically, my recovery time shortened, I feel decades younger, my energy is consistent all day, and the inflammation in my knees cleared up entirely. That’s just what comes to mind writing this.

Progress Takes Longer Than 6 Weeks, and That’s Normal

After six weeks, you’re likely well-adapted with real progress to show, but you probably haven’t hit your ultimate goal yet, and that’s expected. I needed to lose 35 lbs, and it took me six months to get there. Some of you will reach your goal faster, most will take longer. What matters is recognizing the small wins along the way instead of getting derailed by setbacks.

Beyond the natural fluctuations your body goes through, life happens too. A family event with nothing on-plan. A dessert from your old life that gets the better of you. Don’t let it spiral. Get back to it the next day. We’re all human, and one slip isn’t worth abandoning the progress you’ve made. Go back to your recipes, pick something that excites you, and reconnect with why you started. Focusing on everything you get to eat, and everything you’ve already accomplished, does more for motivation than dwelling on any single misstep.

What to Do Once You Reach Your Goal Weight

Some programs suggest reintroducing carbs once you hit your goal weight. I disagree completely. That approach reinforces a “diet mindset,” something you do temporarily before returning to old habits, and it’s been shown repeatedly that this leads to regaining the weight, often with more added back. This is a lifestyle meant to last, built to improve your long-term health and reduce chronic disease risk, not a temporary fix. Reintroducing carbs also pulls you out of ketosis and forfeits the benefits that come with it. By now, you should have a solid sense of your personal carb threshold for staying in ketosis, so stay within it.

Once you’re at your ideal weight, the goal shifts to maintaining it. Your protein intake should already be dialed in based on your activity level, increase it slightly as you become more active. Revisit the Keto Calculator from Lesson 1 to confirm your protein still matches your exercise level, then adjust your calorie intake by increasing fat. Eventually, once your appestat fully heals, hunger alone will guide you to the right intake. Until then, most people need a little help: add about 100 kcal a day (roughly 11g of fat) and monitor for a week or two. Increase further if needed, giving each change enough time to show its true effect.

Keep Tracking, Even After You Reach Your Goal

Don’t stop tracking once you hit your target. I did, and my weight slowly crept back up. After getting frustrated, I started tracking again to figure out why, it turned out a nightly cup of Rooibos tea with 4 oz of heavy cream was adding more fat than I realized. Cutting it to 2 oz stabilized my weight almost immediately. I track consistently now, since my activity level shifts regularly and my body continues adjusting to this lifestyle, likely for a long time to come.
